Mikayla's Story of Hope

"My name is Mikayla, and I am a 27-year-old single mother of 1 year old twin boys. My motherhood journey started on my Golden Birthday when I was 26 years old. I found out on my golden birthday I was expecting. What a great birthday surprise right?! Flash forward 12 weeks later while seeking treatment for hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) the doctor did a bed side ultrasound and saw TWINS! My pregnancy was extremely difficult due to HG. I was also struggling with the thought of being a single mother.

When I gave birth to my twins at 36 weeks via emergency c section, my life changed. Both twin A and B needed time in the NICU. I developed Postpartum Depression as a result. Postpartum Depression held on to me for months even after the twins came home. Slowly after 6 months, I stepped up and began treatment with my mental health so I could be happy and present for my twin boys.  I started therapy and medication to help recover from postpartum depression and hormonal changes. This experience was scary and terrifying, but I found hope in connecting with other mothers in the same situation as me.

NWI Center for Maternal Wellness is amazing for new mothers like me out there. From awareness events, mom’s groups and resources, the Center’s energy and passion are remarkable. I'm so grateful for connecting with other mothers and staff while on the 2025 Hope Walk."
